Ringgold, Georgia

Population: 2,422
Located in Catoosa County

The village of Ringgold was incorporated on 18 December 1847 when George Towns was Governor and the area was a part of Walker County. The first commissioners, appointed by the legislature, were Michael Dickson, George W. H. Anderson, J .J. Johnson, William Buppord, and D.S. Anderson. They were to continue in office until the first Monday in March, 1848. At that time the town's citizens would vote for five commissioners to serve terms of one year. The commissioners had full power to make such by-laws, rules, and regulations as they felt necessary for the improvements and the internal police of the town, provided such laws were not in conflict with the Federal Constitution or the laws of Georgia.

Built in 1849, the Ringgold depot is a stone structure that was common for the time in North Georgia. By the time this depot was built the city was larger than neighboring Chattanooga. A warehouse town at the intersection of three major roads made it the largest town from Augusta to Nashville, a title it would loose within a couple of months to Cassville.
Although small, the structure touched much of the Civil War history in the area.

Relief Map at Ringgold: Built in the 1930's by the WPA, this park and four others commemorate William Tecumseh Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. At this small enclosure made entirely of local material, a marker describes the geography of Northwest Georgia and gives a brief overview of the campaign itself. The bronze marker was cast at Georgia Tech. The park is in the area of the Battle of Ringgold Gap, fought as a rear-guard action by Patrick Cleburne.
