Those who call Woodbine home will tell you that what attracted them to the town was the peace and quiet, the natural beauty, and the way everyone makes you feel like a part of one big family. Woodbine is one of many small towns along the Georgia coast that provide a hometown atmosphere surrounded by the natural beauty of the Georgia coast. Woodbine has a various housing options for families who wish to make the town their home: historic homes in the Woodbine Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, existing homes within established neighborhoods, and new subdivisions being developed in the city and just outside the city limits. We are working to establish a wide range of housing choices to create a diverse community, which values hometown appeal, and quality of life. Woodbine is one of Georgia’s Better Hometowns. This designation was received from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs in 2000. The program helps small communities make good decisions about community growth and development. This assistance is provided through partnerships with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and other local, state, and federal agencies. This program was developed by the Georgia DCA as a small town version of its Classic Main Street program. Woodbine has an excellent elementary school, located off Spur 25. It is part of the Camden County School System. Its exceptional curriculum gives special emphasis to the environment through its gardens, trails, and outdoor classroom. Camden Middle School is located approximately 17 miles away from Woodbine on Middle School Road in Kingsland. Camden County High School is 12 miles from Woodbine at Exit 6 on Interstate 95. Coastal Georgia Community College has a campus in Camden County, known as the Camden Center. It is currently located approximately 20 miles from Woodbine on South Ashley Street. A new campus is being built at 8001 Lakes Boulevard off Wildcat Drive at Exit 6 near the Camden County High School. In 1995, the City of Woodbine received funding from the Intermodal Surface Transportation Enhancement Act (ISTEA) and Department of Defense funds to construct a Boardwalk along the Satilla River and a concrete walkway, known as the Riverwalk, along the old railroad right of way through Woodbine. The project was dedicated in 1998. Although the current Riverwalk ends at 4th Street, plans were approved in 2003 to extend the Riverwalk south to 11th Street. Granite markers along the Riverwalk and Boardwalk, tell the story of the development and impact of transportation in the community. In 1999, eight blocks of the oldest part of Woodbine, including residential and commercial areas, were entered into the National Register of Historic Places. This designation garners national recognition for the significance of Woodbine’s historic and community character. The beautiful Satilla River wanders by Woodbine as it makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean. The river provides the city with a natural beauty and serenity and an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to observe abundant birds and wildlife.
