Kailua-Kona is the heart of North Kona, by far the most developed area in the district. Its Ali'i Drive is lined with shops, hotels, and condos, but for the most part the shoreline vista remains intact because most of the buildings are low-rise. To show just how fertile lava can be when tended, miles of multihued bougainvillea and poinsettias line Ali'i Drive like a lei that leads to the flowerpot of the Kona Gardens. East of town is Mt. Hualalai (8,271 feet), where local people still earn a living growing vegetables and taro on small truck farms high in the mountain coolness.
