McCall, Idaho

Population: 2,084
Located in Valley County

McCall, Idaho is located only two scenic hours from Boise. McCall is similar to a premiere movie, offering all the activities, attractions, and recreation of a blockbuster hit. This town has it all! The main star of our "movie" is Payette Lake, offering views, boating, and relaxation at any of the restaurants nestled on the lakeshore.

McCall also offers skiing at Brundage Mountain Resort with plenty of powder for groomed and cat skiing that makes any skier feel like a star. McCall is surrounded by hundreds of miles of National forest that offers excellent snowmobling and cross country skiing in the winter. In the summer months, the cast changes to produce fishing, hiking, and some of the best whitewater boating in the country on the Salmon and the Payette Rivers.

Ponderosa State Park is the best supporting actor on the lake. A long, rugged peninsula jutting into the lake, Ponderosa offers camping, boat ramps, trails, and scenic views looking back toward town. In the Winter, Ponderosa has over 20 kilometers of cross country ski trails rated for beginner to expert skiers. Abundant wildlife, such as deer, elk, and moose wander through the park, amazing visitors and locals alike.

The McCall-Donnelly School District serves nearly 1,000 students in five schools. The elementary and high school building is located in McCall, as is the new Payette Lakes Middle School. A new K-5 elementary school is located in the community of Donnelly. Secondary schools provide a strong college-preparatory program. The district also has an alternative high school and a preschool program in McCall, and a one-teacher rural school in Yellow Pine.

Our schools offer a broad range of student activities and programs including varsity and junior varsity football, boys' and girls' cross country, basketball and volleyball, plus a wrestling team. There are also community-sponsored sports programs available to students, such as the McCall ski teams and the soccer teams.

Homes are luxurious and reflect the natural surroundings of the lakes and forests. Log homes are the order of the day, with many of them resembling Swiss chalets. A two bedroom condo in town will start at around $120,000. A home on the outskirts built into the mountain will set you back to the tune of $350,000. For a home on the lake, expect to spend right around $500,000, while land begins at $150,000.

Ponderosa State Park covers most of a 1,000-acre peninsula that juts into Payette Lake, just outside McCall. The character of the park is molded by its diverse topography. It ranges from arid sagebrush flats to a lakeside trail; from flat, even ground to steep cliffs; and from dense forest to spongy marsh. Nature trails and dirt roads have been developed so visitors can enjoy these areas.

The park's namesake, the 150-foot-tall ponderosa pine, is the most noticeable species of tree. Douglas and grand fir, Lodgepole pine and western larch also grow in the park. Birds often sighted include osprey, red-tailed hawks, bald eagles, Canada geese, wood ducks and mallards, along with a variety of songbirds, woodpeckers, hummingbirds and ravens. Patient-or just plain lucky-visitors often spot deer, red fox, beavers, muskrats and bear. The park is rich in wildflowers, especially along the interpretive trail that winds around Meadow Marsh.

Whatever activity, home or business you are looking for, McCall has it all, waiting for you!
