Deerfield has long served as anchor of a tri-village area, which includes the communities of Bannockburn and the community of Riverwoods. Deerfield is significantly larger than its two neighbors with a population of 18,420. Reflecting the abundance of deer in the area, early founders settled on the name of Deerfield after a debate with Irish pioneers, who out of respect for their native Ireland, favored the name "Erin."

In recent years, Deerfield has experienced extraordinary growth. Excellent schools and a thriving business community have allured relocators from surrounding suburbs and downtown Chicago as prominent leaders in the industrial sector have stationed headquarters here. Covering seven square miles and producing annual retail sales in excess of $300 million, its reputation has strengthened as an economic leader in the Chicagoland area.

In summer, everyone eagerly awaits the opening of the Deerfield Farmer's Market, which showcases locally grown produce and flowers, freshly baked breads, and various specialty items.

Residents ring in the Fourth of July at Deerfield Family Days on July 3 and 4. Fireworks, a pancake breakfast, a mini-marathon, arts and crafts, rides, games and other activities make this a popular event for all ages.

The Fall Festival, sponsored by the Deerfield Area Historical Society each September, reflects the area's vibrant history. Attractions include food, activities, historic re-enactments, pioneer crafts and demonstrations, and a children's pioneer costume contest.
