The Village was incorporated on December 20, 1893, with 40 "yes" and 11 "no votes and the people called themselves Evergreen Parkers for the first time. The Village took its name from the park at 97th St. and Homan Av. where trees, vines, wild flowers and numerous evergreens flourished. The park was intended to be the center of the Village. Preliminary plans envisioned a town that was a perfect square with its streets radiating from the center similar to Paris, France, but the annexation of the area called Sainte Maria's at the time of incorporation, caused the plan to be abandoned. If a town can bustle, Evergreen Park did, with three factories providing jobs for the local residents. In 1892, the Village was advertised as the new manufacturing suburb of Chicago. The little industrial community caught the eye and imagination of visitors to Chicago's Columbian Exhibition, and many built homes in Evergreen from lumber used at the Fair. The complexion of the town was changed in 1910, when a fire almost destroyed it. Besides seven homes, the blaze took the Armstrong Regalia factory, a 3.5 acre complex at 93rd and Turner, and the Richey Box Factory at 93rd and Spaulding. Evergreen Park has a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities for all ages. There are numerous parks, baseball diamonds and soccer fields for the enjoyment of the residents. The Evergreen Park Recreation Department offers year round and seasonal programs as well as special events. One of its most successful programs has been the preschool for children between the ages of three and five. The Recreation Department also offers tap, ballet baton, Irish dance, tumbling, drama, aerobics, fitness, basketball, soccer, t-ball, volley ball and mom & tot classes. Also located in the village are Evergreen Aqua Pool, Evergreen Racquet & Fitness Club, Bleeker's Bowling Alley, and Evergreen Golf Course. The Martinique Restaurant and Drury Lane Theatre Complex is a popular village landmark. The theatre-restaurant complex offers high quality affordable family entertainment complemented by delectable dining. It is primarily a residential suburb. Most homes here start in the mid $200,000's. For something a little larger, say 2,500 square feet and up, expect to spend upwards of $300,000. For an executive level home the going rate is around $400,000. Homes retain their value though, and a home purchased here is definitely a good investment. Evergreen Park is a community with a distinctive "home town" atmosphere, a place where people really get to know their neighbors. However, a visitor could easily forget that this beautiful, peaceful suburban village is only minutes away from Chicago, third largest city in the nation. Evergreen Park is definitely a must-see place, once here you will fall in love! |
