Harvard, Illinois
Population: 6,000
Located in McHenry County
Although no one knows for sure how much Harvard will change there's no doubt what's driving the change: A massive Motorola Inc. manufacturing plant off U.S. Route 14-a $100 million facility that opened just a few years ago. Before Motorola, Harvard was known for its June Milk Day Festival and a mascot named Harmilda, a large plastic cow that greets visitors at the town's gateway on Route 14. Although unmistakably rural, Harvard straddles two worlds as an "everybody-knows-your-business" kind of McHenry County farm town and as a far-flung Chicago suburb. Still, there's one industry that's banking on big changes in Harvard: health care. In the last two years, three hospital chains have come to town; Mercy Health Care Systems of Janesville opened its Route 14 clinic in July; a clinic affiliated with Swedish-American Health Care Systems in Rockford is in its final stages on the northern edge of town; and Rockford Memorial Hospital forged an alliance with the 37-bed Harvard Hospital.
