Hickory Hills, 19 miles southwest of the Loop in Cook County, is a neighborly suburb that attracts a mix of middle-class families with a population of 13,021. Residents describe Hickory Hills as easy-going, peaceful and a fun place to live. People rarely move out of the community, but if they do, it's usually across the street to Palos Hills. Children and senior citizens are a vital concern of the city park district, and many events are organized for them. Haunted houses are erected for Halloween, parties are organized for all generations at Christmas, and concerts are arranged throughout the summer. Hickory Hills sponsors a street fair and fest every summer. The Fourth of July is celebrated by an annual parade with city-wide participation. The city boasts an extensive senior citizens program. The Senior Citizen Commission interacts with the city council to implement creative and helpful services. Field trips and dinners dominate the commission's social calendar. The city also has a Meals-on-Wheels program for elderly shut-ins, while "PASTE", Palos Area Transportation Service for the Elderly, provides round-trip bus service to all destinations within the Palos Township on a reservation basis. Field trips and other special excursions take place annually. Hickory Hills, though people have been living in the area for many years, emerged in the late 1940s and early 1950s when a residential development took shape on the site of a Hickory Hills golf course. The city was incorporated in 1951. It derived its name from the many hickory trees and hilly terrain found in the area.
