In the early 1900s, Skokie had become known for its vegetable farms, greenhouses and saloons. But it was in the first quarter of the century that two important developments took place that were sure signs of stability and growth. The Northwestern Railroad made it possible for residents to travel to Chicago in 1903, and the Village's first bank opened in 1907. Accessibility to the town continued in 1933 with the first paved concrete road in Cook County, outside of Chicago, on what is now Church Street. Access to the Village created a minor population explosion that at one point established Skokie as "The World's Largest Village." A real estate boom ensued until the Great Depression. It a testament to the great strength of area residents that new churches were established, that civic organizations were born that still exist today, and that the education system grew, even in the face of tough economic times. The same strength was evident after WWII, as Skokie's single-family home building flourished as the population doubled between 1940 and 1950. It is from these roots that Skokie has grown and flourished. For Skokie's population of over 63,000 people, "Embrace the Past, Envision the Future" takes on a fresh new meaning as the 21st century begins bringing more challenges and rewards to a community ready for the new millennium!
