Lisle, IllinoisLike a small town atmosphere with all the advantages of big-city living? Lisle is situated between Downers Grove on the east, Woodridge on the south, Naperville on the west and both Wheaton and Glen Ellyn on the north. It has a population of just over 21,000. While for years it was best known for the Morton Arboretum, a 1700 acre nature sanctuary with more than 3600 kinds of trees, shrubs, vines and other plants from around the world, today it holds several other "claims to fame" including that as home to Benedictine University and as a vital link in the Technology Corridor which parallels I-88 from Oak Brook west.
Like most communities along the Chicago Burlington and Quincy railroad (the Q-Line), it grew up with a small central business district and -- in this case -- ranches, bungalows and Cape Cods in "walk to train" locations. As the town expanded, however, its officials took a more pro-active approach as reflected in some of its unique offerings: * Green Trails is an extremely popular planned unit development which includes single family homes, townhomes and condos surrounded by 26 miles of bike and walking trails, ponds, tennis courts and lots of green-space. The first phase began in the mid-1970's and some new construction is still in progress today. * Four Lakes was built in the 1960's as an upscale apartment complex with pools, lakes, tennis courts and a ski-hill. Part of the complex has since been converted to condominiums and townhomes. Prices here run from $84,500 for a studio to $169,900 for a three-BR. * Woodridge Estates is an older subdivision which includes ranches, split levels and two-story homes -- each built on a half acre of land. Most recent sales have run from $215,000 to $265,000 and reflect their need for updating and renovation. Some of Lisle's newer properties are Hidden Lakes, McKenzie Station, Riverbend and Canterbury Trails. Lisle has its own highly rated K-12 school system (Unit District 202) but, as part of concessions granted to homeowners worried about what further development would mean to the quality of education, some of its children are serviced by Naperville 203, Downers Grove 99, and Wheaton/Warrenville 200. Benet Academy -- a Benedictine operated high school -- is also located here, drawing students from throughout the far west suburban area. Three popular events are sponsored by the village each year including, most notably, an "Eyes to the Skies" balloon festival which last year drew almost 200,000 visitors over a four-day period. The Lisle Park District also offers a complete schedule of programs and activities to residents of all ages. Some of its facilities include the Sea Lion Aquatic Center, Riverbend Golf Course and 450 acres of parks/picnic areas.
