The motto of this city is "Gateway to the Chain O' Lakes." Located 15 miles south of Wisconsin in the eastern edge of McHenry County, the city's distinctive features are its site on the Fox River and the cluster of lakes just to the north.
Glaciers that rolled in during the Ice Age gave this area the hills, lakes and marshes that, along with the river, established the setting for the city, which began attracting Chicagoans about 70 years ago. The North Western Railway was used to transport people here, where they could cruise the Fox River up to nearby Grass Lake. In reference to the city's past, one of the more pricey housing developments in McHenry is dubbed Glacier Ridge. There, upscale homes sit on large, hilly lots along winding streets and cost $200,000 to $500,000. Outside this range are more affordable and more expensive homes. Some of the homes in McHenry can carry $1 million price tags, especially the large equestrian estates located on the outskirts of the city. But old homes are not all that McHenry offers potential home buyers. Some of the homes on the river are new, which falls in line with city plans to refresh the three Iong-standing retail districts in a downtown redevelopment effort. These areas include The Green Street shopping district, which roughly runs through the center of the city, Riverside Drive, which curves around the Fox River; and the Main Street shopping district. The nearly 20,000 residents of McHenry are used to the sounds and sights of construction. It seems as this city has doubled in size within the last 10 years, referring to the many housing developments around town. On the West Side of the city is Glacier Heights, a development of 2,500-square-foot homes that joined nearby Glacier Ridge. Martins Woods is another upscale development on the hilly terrain in the West Side of the city.-->
