Norridge, Illinois

Population: 14,000
Located in Cook County

Norridge shares 70 percent of its borders with Chicago and is 12 miles from the Loop. This makes this urban community a perfect place for those who want to live near the city, but not in it. Good public transportation, easy access to major expressways, excellent shopping and low real estate taxes are just some of the assets that cause houses on the market to move quickly. The village has an active youth activities program, founded by the late Joseph Sieb. The program offers various sports in which children of all ages may participate. The Norridge Park District schedules activities for all age groups. In addition to karate classes and walking clubs, there is a whole range of family activities.

Housing. The community has a pleasant mix of long-time residents and move-up buyers. Older homes are being razed to make room for new, upscale raised ranches and bi-levels, selling in the $200,000 to $600,000 price range. Condominiums are located to the east and north of the Norridge Commons Shopping Center and prices range from $125,000 to $260,000.

Schools. Most elementary students attend district 80 schools. Districts 79 and 86 also serve the community. Pennoyer School in district 79 offers a full-day kindergarten. Most students attend Ridgewood High School in district 234. A few attend Maine Township South High School in district 207. The 1997 average ACT composite scores for Maine South and Ridgewood were 23.1 and 21.4, respectively.

Transportation. Loop-bound drivers can pick up the Kennedy Expressway (I-90) at Cumberland Ave. It is a 15-minute drive to O'Hare and 45 minutes to Midway. Commuters can board the O'Hare El train for a 35-minute ride to the Loop.
