Richmond is a community located in McHenry County in Northern Illinois, 60 miles south of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 60 miles north of Chicago, Illinois and 50 miles east of Rockford, Illinois. This places Richmond at the center of a metropolitan area of approximately 8 million people. We are also placed between two major airports (Mitchell Field in Milwaukee and O'Hare International in Chicago). Additionally, we are centered between the major seaports of Milwaukee and Chicago. We are linked to these two commercial transportation areas by a strong network of roads and expressways. Settled by pioneers over 150 years ago, Richmond received its name when Isaac Reed climbed to the top of the newly erected mill (pictured below) in 1844. He won the climbing contest and with it the right to name the settlement. Reed named it after his childhood hometown of Richmond, Vermont. The residents of Richmond are often told by visitors that the Village has something special, some magic that makes them feel so relaxed, even when they come just for the afternoon. It could be the many buildings filled with character, lovingly preserved and restored to show off our pride in our mid 1800's roots. With its laid-back charm, it's hard to believe Richmond is only about an hour from Chicago, Rockford or Milwaukee. Other activities offered are golfing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and hunting, all right here in Richmond. Seasonal attractions include vegetable stands, two Christmas tree farms, the Round-Up Days Festival (last weekend of August) and the traditional Christmas of Yesteryear (Thanksgiving weekend). Another huge hit with residents and visitors alike is "The Cruise". Every Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. beginning May and ending in August, collector cars come to Main Street. Richmond has further benefited by its close proximity to major colleges, universities and vocational institutions in both the Illinois and Wisconsin areas. The Village of Richmond is dedicated to all of its citizens - families, workers and business owners. Everyone can prosper here. In the late 1960's and early 1970's new entrepreneurs came to Richmond and began recycling the old buildings in the downtown area for new uses. We were one of the first communities to do a revitalization program entirely with private funds. The downtown and surrounding area is filled today with independently owned antique and specialty shops. These beautifully restored buildings are the unique charm that completes the integrity of our past within today's village. Providing quality education built upon a solid foundation of basic knowledge acquisition. The district offers comprehensive programs. To support our belief that each student is entitled to an appropriate education, enrichment opportunities, are available. Extracurricular activities include volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, track, fine arts club, chess club, as well as enrichment and skill maintenance summer learning. With so much on offer, too much to describe here, Richmond is a city on the go and on the grow! Come and see Richmond, you'll never want to leave! Find homes for sale in Richmond Illinois
