Riverwoods, Illinois

Population: 3,000
Located in Lake County

Trees. That is the one word answer often given to the question: "Why live in Riverwoods?"

Riverwoods includes some of Chicago area's most heavily wooded and untouched tracts, such as the Ryerson Forest Preserve. And true to its name, Riverwoods is the place where the Des Plaines River zigzags a path through the trees.

The roads of Riverwoods wind and twist. Deer nibble on trees. Wild flowers are more commonly cultivated than stretches of bluegrass.

There is one gas station and only a small shopping center on Milwaukee Avenue. The village offers no city services. Children attend school in Banockburn or Deerfield. Most homes have well water, and police protection is provided by the Lake County Sheriff's Department. On the plus side, property taxes tend to be lower than surrounding suburbs.
