Wonder Lake, a finger-shaped 840-acre lake in McHenry County, was built in 1930 by real estate developers to create a vacation spot and summer retreat. That probably explains why many residents in the Wonder Lake area don't live in an official municipality, but rather in loosely organized homeowners' associations.

Wonder Lake does not have industrial companies and has little commercial development. The main intersection on the east side hosts a gas station, a hardware store, a couple of taverns, three pizza parlors, a marina and a laundry. The west side has a grocery store.
