Woodstock, Illinois

Population: 23,241
Located in McHenry County

Outlined in white lights, the Victorian buildings in Woodstock's city square create a scene at Christmas that looks something like Main Street in Disney World. Most would agree Woodstock is picture-perfect, but unlike the amusement park, Woodstock is not fantasy. It is the real thing.

Woodstock's Norman Rockwell-like charm is a big reason why people move here. One local resident said a lot of newcomers "happen on" Woodstock when they are just wandering northwest of Chicago.

The city is not generally considered a bedroom community for downtown commuters. Instead, Woodstock attracts a lot of young families who prefer a more rural setting but drive to jobs in Chicago's far Northwest suburbs.

Woodstock is the county seat of McHenry, the state's fastest growing county. Despite the population boom, the city has been careful to preserve its historical buildings, many of which rim the central square, marked with Civil War monuments and an old-fashioned bandstand.

Though many residents commute to suburban jobs, Woodstock has some industry of its own, although most of the die manufacturers, printing companies and plastics makers. One of the biggest employers in town is the Claussen Pickle Co., which has 330 workers.
