Elkhart County is world renowned in the business world for being a well known manufacturing hub. With 50% of the labor force being involved in the manufacturing, Elkhart County has the 2nd largest manufacturing base in Indiana. In Elkhart City alone, there are more than 900 manufacturers; many of which are involved in the production of Recreational Vehicles and Manufactured Housing. More than 300 manufacturers in the area produce recreational vehicles and parts that have helped to give Elkhart County the name "RV Capital of the World." The Elkhart area is also the "Band Instrument Capital of the World," a title earned in the last century. Elkhart is also the home of Bayer Corporation, which is one of the largest employers with 2,600 workers. With all these employers this results in an unemployment rate for June 1997 of 2.8% and local companies are seeking good employees. The residents of Elkhart center their lives around a myriad of lakes and rivers, which give summers of joy and provide picturesque settings for fashionable homes of every size. A recent survey cites the area's housing as the "nation's most affordable." This is Amish Country, where pristine farms seem painted on a landscape of green and golden crops, where roadways have special lanes for quaint black Amish buggies. Many points of interest include the Elkhart Jazz Festival, Elkhart Air Show, Elkhart Grand Prix go-cart races bring tens of thousands of visitors to the area every year.
