The Town of Griffith was founded in January of 1854, and incorporated on October 29, 1904. The town covers an area of approximately 7 square miles and there are about 60 miles of streets. Town functions are paid through property taxes and state shared taxes. Griffith's 18,000 residents enjoy a variety of social, cultural, and recreational facilities.

The town's business is administered by a five-person Town Council and a Clerk-Treasurer. All stand for election every four years. Additionally, business and community leaders are appointed by the Town Council to serve on various councils and commissions, such as the Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Police Commission.
