Located on the edge of the Ohio River, Jeffersonville features the antiquity of being part of a town planned by Thomas Jefferson himself and the convenience of being just 5 miles from Louisville. Thomas Jefferson planned a unique design for the City, offering alternate spaces of "trees and turf" for the community situated on the banks of the Ohio River. This entire region of Southern Indiana is called the Sunny Side of Louisville, and offers reasonable housing, great locations along the Ohio River and small tributaries further inland, and picturesque views of the area surrounding this great river. In 1834, James Howard launched his first steamboat, the Hyperion, at Jeffersonville. For nearly a century the Howard family turned out some of the finest ships on American rivers, and shipbuilding remains a major component in Jeffersonville's economy. The town continues to promote its river town roots with a program to preserve Jeffersonville's historic commercial architecture along the scenic Ohio River. Despite its historical small town charm, Jeffersonville today revels in big city sophistication. The local economy is broad, boasting products and services as diverse as kitchen cabinets, statistical processing, trucking and distribution, steel fabrication, electronic components, and a host of other enterprises located in industrial centers such as the Jeffersonville Industrial Park, American Place, and the Clark Maritime Centre. Residents and tourists alike enjoy the town's parks, shopping, sports, romantic bed & breakfasts, and stirring vistas along the Ohio River. Recently named one of Indiana's seven "Hidden Treasures," Schimpff's Confectionery has been producing fine handmade candies in Jeffersonville since 1891. The business is located in a unique brick and tile storefront with a tin ceiling. The building was erected just after the Civil War; it has survived three major floods, and markers on the front record the height of the flood waters. More recent favorites are the chocolate-covered caramels and pecans molded into the shape of turtles. Lunch is served at Schimpff's old-fashioned soda fountain. Part of the Old Jeffersonville National Register District, it was the site of a bakery complex that produced hardtack for Union soldiers. The park's centerpiece is the former Jeffersonville Public Library, a neoclassical structure distinguished by its small but magnificent bronze dome. Nearby Louisville offers a quality of life that is matched by few in the country. Not only is Louisville one of nine communities with a resident professional opera, theater, orchestra, ballet and children's theater. Louisville also is home to several world-class museums and educational attractions, such as the J.B. Speed Art Museum, Glassworks and the Louisville Science Center.
