Long before Indiana became a state, long before the founding of Schererville, people called this place the "Crossroads." The name was appropriate, for several Indian trails that later became routes for the wagons of settlers traveling west intersected here. One of those settlers was Nicholas Scherer, who arrived in the U.S. from Germany in 1846. When he came to this place at the southern tip of Lake Michigan in 1866, he founded the community that bears his name. Today, trails still cross at Schererville, the modern trails of a motorized society, U.S. Highways 41 and 30. Nearby are newer trails, I-80/94 and I-65. All these are primary transcontinental routes and gives Schererville its slogan: "Crossroads of the Nation."

Schererville boasts a variety of excellent recreational facilities, including a sports complex, two golf courses, and a race track. The Schererville Park Department maintains 18 parks and offers wide-ranging activities such as exercise and aerobics programs, tennis and soccer. The community's proximity to Indiana Dunes State Park on the shores of Lake Michigan enhance its recreational opportunities.

The Lake Central School Corporation serves some 7,810 Schererville area students. It operates a high school, two middle schools, and six kindergarten through fifth elementary schools. These students come from the rapidly growing communities of Schererville, Dyer, St. John and St. John Township. To accommodate continuing growth, the school system has added to existing school buildings and is planning construction of a seventh elementary school in the near future. The area also has several private and parochial schools that provide excellent educational programs. Several well-known institutions for higher education for higher education are nearby. These include Purdue Calumet, Hammond; Calumet College, Whiting; Indiana University Northwest, Gary; and Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Hyles Anderson College, Crown Point.

Five hospitals provide high quality health care and treatment to the Schererville area. These are St. Margaret Mercy Health Care South Campus, St. Anthony Medical Center, Munster Community Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and Southlake Center for Mental Health Care. A variety of clinics also offer medical and dental services.
