In 1998, nearly 61% of Indiana's high school graduates went on to college, compared to the national average of 57.2%, ranking Indiana 17th in the nation. From 1994 to 1998, the national average experienced little to no growth while Indiana's college going rate increased by 5.5%, placing the state among the top ten for percentage gains in college attendance of high school graduates.

Higher Education

In 1999, the Indiana General Assembly authorized the creation of a new learning partnership in Indiana, the Community College of Indiana. This partnership of Ivy Tech State College and Vincennes University focuses on both non-degree, skill improvement courses as well as two-year degrees, with greater opportunity to transfer course credits to four-year state universities. The new Community College stresses accessible and affordable education, training and support services.

Vincennes University is a residential, comprehensive community school. The school offers Associate in Science, Associate in Arts, and Associate in Applied Science degrees. The University's programs of study are divided into two basic categories: academic transfer and occupational education. These programs of study are offered through eight instructional divisions. More than 5,000 students are served on the Vincennes campus of VU each year. The university also has sites in Jasper, Indianapolis, Elkhart and across the state.
