Originally dubbed "Catfish Bend," the city has been a hub of commerce for the surrounding area because of its varied transportation links -- highways, rivers, railroad, and airport.

Four distinct seasons provide the beauty of an ever changing, colorful landscape. Each season is filled with all sorts of leisure activities, from concerts to Broadway touring companies to the excitement of Big Ten football and basketball. Steamboat Days is rollicking summertime fun on our riverfront featuring national entertainers. And in winter, cross-country ski trails provide an invigorating and fun escape.

The Burlington Parks and Recreation Department offers 13 public parks with many recreational facilities. Some of these include open shelters, picnicking equipment, basketball courts, Little League ball diamonds, walking trails, tennis courts, playground equipment, historic buildings, a gazebo, the Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course, and an outdoor public swimming pool in Dankwardt Park. But if that is not enough, some of the parks host lakes, wedding facilities, fountains and even boat ramps to the mighty Mississippi River.

On May 5, 1998, the community broke ground for this first-class, forward-looking facility in Flint Ridge Business Park. This 59 acre complex will meet the recreation needs of thousands of area residents...and enable us to attract state and national tournaments in some of America's most popular amateur sports. The grand opening was held in the summer of 1999.

The facilities include: parking for 250+ vehicles, 19 acres for future expansion, food & beverage facility, safe tot lot, three softball fields, four soccer fields, combination soccer/softball field, four sand volleyball courts, and a walking/jogging/cycling path. A professional manager and staff coordinate the bookings and activities.

The RecPlex was needed because the demand for leisure activities has skyrocketed in the past decade...but the supply of local facilities had not kept up. We've all become more aware that from toddlers to our oldest senior citizens, activity and exercise are essential to good health and well-being. This project, from its tot lot to walking paths and masters' leagues for seniors, will meet that need. Also, the provision of facilities for all ages will help build stronger families - and stronger ties throughout the community as generations mingle in healthy, enjoyable recreational activity.
