Economy
Cedar Rapids is home to several large businesses and industries, including General Mills, Cargill, Alliant Energy, GE Commercial Finance, Rockwell Collins, Quaker Oats, AEGON, McLeodUSA, Archer Daniels Midland, Qwest, GreatAmerica Leasing, RuffaloCODY and Cedar Rapids Steel Transport (CRST). Square D has a major factory facility south of town. Although many of these companies have been located in Cedar Rapids for quite some time, a larger number of high-tech industries are locating in or around Cedar Rapids because it is part of the Technology Corridor, a region of the state that also includes the Iowa City metro area to the south. Much of Iowa's technological businesses and industries operate from this corridor.

Education
Iowa has long enjoyed a reputation of having one of the finest educational systems in America. When it comes to education, Iowans strive to be at, or near, the very top. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills and Iowa Tests of Education Development place Linn County schools in the top percentage nationally. Students consistently rank well above the national average, with all grades scoring in the 63rd percentile and above.

The metropolitan area is served by four independent public school districts, a parochial school system and two private schools. The public school districts are: Cedar Rapids Community Schools, Linn-Mar, Marion Independent and College Community.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District includes 23 elementary schools, one K-8 school, five middle schools, and four high schools (including Metro High, an alternative high school). The Linn-Mar Community School District has five elementary schools, a junior high, a middle school and Linn-Mar High School. The Marion School District has two elementary schools, an intermediate school, a middle school and Marion High School. College Community schools have three elementary schools, a middle school and Prairie High School. The district also supports Oaks School for behaviorally challenged K-12 students.

Coe College, a four-year private residential college located in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids. Cornell College is a four-year private residential college that offers the combination of liberal arts study with the One-Course-At-A-Time framework. Hamilton is the oldest business college in Iowa, offering four-year bachelor degrees, two-year associate degrees, one-year diplomas and short-term certificate programs.

Kirkwood Community College offers 75 programs in applied science and technology, 68 arts and sciences majors or areas of study, and 14 college career-option programs. Kirkwood also offers extensive technical and professional training, and year-round Continuing Education classes. Mount Mercy is a Catholic College providing student-focused baccalaureate education in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy. Located in northeast Cedar Rapids, the College offers 36 majors in liberal arts and the professions including business,education and nursing.

Located 25 miles south of Cedar Rapids, The University of Iowa is a major public research university with a long-standing commitment to teaching, research and service. About 18,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate and professional students are enrolled in the University’s ten colleges.

Art & Culture
The Tree of Five Seasons sculpture is the city's centerpiece, located where 1st Avenue crosses the Cedar River. Cedar Rapids is home to The Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra, The Paramount Theatre, Theatre Cedar Rapids, and Brucemore-A National Trust Historic Site, among others.
