Davenport, Iowa, is the largest of the Quad Cities both in population and land area. The city is named after Colonel George Davenport, one of the first settlers in the area. Davenport's downtown is the home of the River Center Convention Center, a restored Art Deco theater, and also includes riverfront parks and riverboat gambling. Workers at the many financial and commercial enterprises in the downtown area love the unobstructed views of the beautiful Mississippi River. Ringing the downtown are many spectacular 19th century mansions in an area known as the "Gold Coast" which is currently undergoing energetic restoration. Davenport is the home of picturesque residential neighborhoods dating from the 1940's. These areas are well-maintained and enjoy lush foliage, large trees and a quiet Midwestern atmosphere. On the periphery, Davenport boasts new subdivisions which include homes in various price ranges. Davenport is the county seat of Scott County. It is situated in the heart of the greatest agricultural center of the country. It is here that the Mississippi River forms the boundary between Iowa and Illinois.
