Forest City, Iowa
Population: 4,500 Located in Hancock County
Forest City is the home of Winnebago Industries. The number one company in motor home industry. We have an excellent school system with updated facilities, and handicap services. We are a small town of around 4,500 population and a great place to raise a family. Other amenities include: YMCA, one of the top 18 hole golf courses in Iowa, and Waldorf College. Forest City is often called "the smallest big town in Iowa." With a population of 4,500 friendly people, Forest City offers all of the charm and warmth of small-town America. However, big-city benefits also abound. For recreation look no further than Forest City! Located just four miles away is Pilot Knob State Park and Preserve. Standing atop the tower on "Pilot Knob," the second highest point in Iowa, visitors have a spectacular view. From the tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, one can see great expanses of some of the most fertile farmland in the world. Hidden within the 700-acre park and enclosed by abrupt banks is Dead Man's Lake, a four-acre floating sphagnum bog, the only one of its kind in Iowa. This is a botanist's delight, bordered by native trees, shrubs and flowering plants. Waterfowl feed and breed in the tall grasses. Three species of pond lilies grow here, one found nowhere else in Iowa. Trees native to the Pilot Knob area include walnut, ash, basswood, wild cherry, burr oak, aspen, white oak and red oak. The largest motor home manufacturing facility in the world, Winnebago Industries, Inc., is located right here in Forest City in what we refer to as the most productive 60 acres in North Iowa. It is also proud to be the home of Waldorf College since 1903. Waldorf brings operas, symphonies, and world-class entertainment to town on a regular basis. The Mansion, headquarters for the Winnebago Historical Society, was built at the turn of the century as a private home. It was a private home for several families until 1945 when it was converted into a hotel, then acquired and restored by the Winnebago Historical Society in 1977. Forest City's Bear Creek is 18 scenic holes of memorable golf. The front 9 (also known as 'The Cub') is challenging and enjoyable, yet plays slightly easier than the back 9 (known as 'The Grizzly). You've never seen a more diverse group of holes on one golf course. Various housing options are available including apartments, condos, townhouses, single-family homes, and duplexes. A 3 bedroom, 2-bathroom condo with a square footage of over 1,400 square feet would be around $79,000. A single-family starter home, beautifully showcased with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and 889 square feet would be about $82,000. A beautiful 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, ranch style home with over 1,000 square feet would be around $127,000. Our town is warm, friendly, and safe. You will have to go a long way to find better people than your friends in Forest City.
