Mount Vernon, the home of Cornell College was settled in the 1840's and was first called the "Hill City." The quaint downtown area stores date from 1860 to 1904 and are very similar in architecture. The historical residential district features many styles, including Victorian, Colonial Revival, Queen Anne and others.
