Vinton, Iowa

Population: 5,200
Located in Benton County

Vinton is the county seat of Benton, a quiet, sparsely populated county in the central region of Iowa. This is true farm country and many homes here are spread far apart, interspersed with small towns and one or two larger cities.

Vinton is one of the small towns with a population of just over 5,200 residents. However, don't think that means this place has nothing to do or nothing to see. Mary Ingalls of Little House on the Prairie attended the Iowa College for the Blind right here in Vinton. Firstly it must be pointed out that this is not an attraction for tourists but a working building. It is easily the most impressive building in Vinton and surrounded by land and a park.

Stop by the Ray House or the Ellis House, Queen Anne mansions. Or maybe you would appreciate the Carpenter Gothic architectural style of the Horridge House. If riding the rails sounds less confining, don't miss the Vinton Railroad Depot and Museum, considered one of the finest passenger stations in eastern Iowa.

Cool nights, plenty of snow and constant change are things you can pretty much count on from Central Iowa's weather. The fall colors are known worldwide, but other seasons are just as beautiful. A fresh snowfall serenely blankets the ground while leaving tufts like cotton on tree branches. Spring brings a mix of brown and green in every shade and hue as leaves are rejuvenated.

Vinton is home to many picturesque buildings and homes. These range from pre-Victorian to contemporary. Like most of Iowa, the house prices are reasonable. If you choose to buy in town most of the homes are older, but on the outskirts there are plenty of choices from old farmhouse to new development.

For an area that is rural, far from the madding crowd, surrounded by working farms and rolling hills, Vinton is the place for you! Come and see what rural treasure is waiting for you.
