Bel Aire, Kansas The City of Bel Aire, is located in South-Central Kansas within the state’s most populous county of Sedgwick and carries a rich and unique 46-year history dating to its original formation in January 1955 as an improvement district to incorporating as a 3rd Class city on November 26, 1980. The Improvement District was established in 1955 by T.E. Devlin and T.N. Pearson as a way to construct a water system to serve the area. In 1998, Bel Aire city officials received state recognition to become a City of the 2nd class under Kansas State Statutes. Bel Aire abuts the city of Wichita to the Northeast, the state’s largest city. The city is also part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) which encompasses Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties. Bel Aire is a small bedroom community with a population of 6,014 (U.S. Census 2000). Residents occupy 2,024 housing units. The city has experienced a 60% population increase since becoming a 2nd class city on November 26, 1980.
