Frontenac, Kansas
Population: 2,996
Located in Crawford County
Frontenac was a typical "boom town" that sprang up almost over-night at the discovery of rich coal deposits. Since its inception in 1886, the community has always been a full service community with schools, police and fire departments, parks, Catholic and Methodist churches, downtown businesses, bank, lodges and clubs. Frontenac is proud of its ethnic heritage, as the home of immigrants-- Italian, French, Austrian, and German and many others. The 1910 census recorded that 21 nationalities were represented in the approximately 3,000 residents that came to work in the mines and whose ethic of hard work is a tradition still carried on by its current residents. Frontenac Industrial Park, which is adjacent to Atkinson Municipal Airport and accessible from US Highway 69 and State Highway 160, is currently the site of 7 large and small light industrial employers. Incentives available from the City of Frontenac are primarily based on job creation and investment in buildings and equipment.
