Located at exactly the center of Crawford County - where Kansas Highways 47 and 7 meet - Girard continues to occupy a key place in the area's economic mix. This community is not only the county seat, it includes a vibrant school system, two major car dealerships, a thriving town square, and enough industry to make it much more than just a rural hub. Low crime and good schools make it an appealing place for families. Downtown Girard is built around a traditional courthouse square with many turn-of-the-century buildings. The town also boasts a regional addiction treatment center, a regional juvenile detention center, sheriff's department complex, new fire station and city hall building, new Emergency Medical Service facilities, and a recent $1.5 million renovation to the Carnegie-style library. During the past five years, two banks have joined the community making the total four, and two printing companies set up shop. Continuing as a major force in the community is Hospital District No. 1 of Crawford County.
