Located on a bend in the Arkansas River, Great Bend was once home to numerous Native American tribes and was a stop along the Santa Fe Trail. While the early economy of Great Bend revolved around trading between the Indians and the white men, the current economic base is diverse, including oil production, manufacturing, and agriculture. Schools in and around Great Bend belong to the Unified School District 428. The district enrolls about 3200 students, with the average class size between 16 and 18. Great Bend offers much in the way of outdoor entertainment, with several wildlife refuges and nature conservancies. In addition, there are many parks, zoos, and hunting areas.
