Leawood, Kansas

Located in Johnson County
Incorporated as a municipality in 1948, Leawood quickly became known for its lovely residential neighborhoods, beautiful parks and superior schools. As the City has developed into a more diversified community of residential, retail and office development, the desire to "grow with distinction" has remained the primary focus of the Leawood Governing Body. As a result, home values in Leawood are the third highest in Johnson County, Kansas. The average home is appraised at $352,047, reflecting homeowners' demand for the kind of housing stock Leawood offers - everything from elegant, stately older homes to exclusive estates to newly constructed higher-end subdivisions. Hallbrook leads the list of many upscale Leawood neighborhoods, including among others Tomahawk Creek Estates, Berkshire Estates, Hazelwood, Quail Crest, Worthington, Steeplechase, The Woods, Whitehorse and the Villas of Iron Horse. Leawood has a 66-acre City Park where residents enjoy soccer fields, lighted tennis courts, park shelters, softball / baseball fields, t-ball / softball fields, sand volleyball courts, playgrounds and a basketball court. The park also has a loop-jogging trail that serves as the trailhead for the main path along the Tomahawk Greenway Trail. Leawood City Park is also home to the Leawood Aquatic Center which was recently remodeled with a zero depth pool, a 145-foot water slide, increased decking and green areas, water toys and fountains and hosts a multitude of fun and games during the 4th of July Celebration and summer camp programs. The Recreation Division oversees the Leawood Aquatic Facility and all recreational programs, excluding sports. The Department of Wildlife and Parks stock the three lakes located along the Tomahawk Creek Parkway with channel catfish, green sunfish and large mouth bass every month between April and September. For the many area golf lovers, Ironhorse Golf Club, a public golf course, is the perfect place to hit the links. Situated on 189 wooded acres, natural waterways and prairie grasslands, Ironhorse is a first-class 18-hole championship par 72 course. Other premier clubs in the area include the Hallbrook Country Club and Leawood South Country Club. Both offer private golf courses, tennis and dining facilities. Leawood Country Club, in northern Leawood, offers swimming, indoor and outdoor tennis, workout facilities, dining and banquet areas. Several other public and private golf courses are also easily accessible from Leawood. Less than 30 minutes away from any location in Leawood is a rich cultural legacy that, among other things, includes: world-renowned museums regarding traditional and contemporary art, jazz, agriculture, World War I and the Negro baseball leagues; a presidential library and world champion baseball, football and soccer teams. Given the city's focus on children and families, even the little ones have their own exciting places to visit, including the Children's Museum of Kansas City, Science City, Coterie Children's Theatre, newly renovated and expanded Kansas City Zoo, Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead, Theatre for Young America, Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City, Arabia Steamboat Museum, and the Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun family amusement parks. Today, with picturesque parks and streets, highly rated schools and welcoming places of worship, Leawood is all that the founders envisioned: Through hard work and careful planning, contemporary Leawood has become - and will remain - a community of vision and sophistication committed to providing its residents and businesses the quality of life they seek.
