Ottawa/Franklin County, Kansas Located in the heart of the rich Marais des Cygnes River Valley, Ottawa has prospered as the farmer prospered. Franklin County is one of the leading dairy and soybean producing counties in Kansas. Agriculture is a 25 to 30 million-dollar industry in the county with livestock production amounting to $15 million, while crop production averages $26 million annually and was ranked 54th in the state for crop production in 1998. There were 1,700 farms in 1998. The Ottawa/Franklin County Economic Development Corporation, in cooperation with the City, County and Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce is prepared to help locate any new business that desires to expand into the Ottawa/Franklin County area. The town is adequately served by its municipally-owned water and light plant with electrical service interconnect agreement with BPU, which provides the home-owner with one of the lowest electric rates in the state and the industrial user with a very competitive industrial rate. Located on US Interstate Highway 35, a part of the 41 thousand-mile interstate system of 4-lane super-highways that will link every major city in the United States, making Ottawa within an hour driving time of Kansas City. US Highway 59, State Highway 33 and 68 also run through Ottawa. Ottawa is located on the main line of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad, and is served by 10 truck lines, giving service throughout the nation. Ottawa has a good municipal airport, with a 4,500 ft. paved runway, paved taxi-ways and paved ramps. It has standard all-night lighting with rotating beacon. Charter plane service is available. The Kansas Gas Service Company furnishes a sufficient gas supply to Ottawa. All modern means of communication are available in Ottawa. Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. services the area. Ottawa has some 34 churches. Every major denomination is well represented in Ottawa. A fine feeling of cooperation exists among the churches. The Franklin County Mental Health Center, serves citizens of all ages in this county. Six licensed master level psychologists, three advanced registered nurse practitioners, two full-time licensed specialist clinical social workers, two licensed master level social workers, one licensed marriage and family therapist and one licensed masters associate social worker are available to the community. Ottawa University is a four-year Liberal Arts College related to the Baptist denomination. The college has been accredited continuously by the North Central Assn. since 1914.
