Benton is located in Western Kentucky, a portion of the area known as the Purchase. The city was founded in 1842, named the County Seat of Marshall County in that year, and incorporated as a city in 1845. Benton was named for Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858).

In 1995, Benton celebrated it's Sesquicentennial, and the Memorial Plaza in downtown Benton was the site of a ceremony dedicating plaques to the founders, Mr.'s. Bearden and Clayton, and Senator Benton.

Recreation: Benton residents are fortunate in that they live near one of the greatest outdoor recreation areas in the United States. Just to the east of town, forming the eastern border of Marshall County is Kentucky Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes on the planet. Slightly further east is Lake Barkley, and in the middle is the Land Between the Lakes, a 170,000-acre reserve created in the early 1960's and allowed to return to its natural state. Hunting, fishing, boating...if you can do it outdoors and on the water, this is the place for you. The recreation area offers 300 miles of beaches and 200 miles of hiking and biking trails.

If golfing is more your idea of a "par"fect day out, then you must try the Village Green Golf Course, an 18 hole course that is well-laid out and in the middle of some of the most beautiful countryside around. This golf course is located in the Land Between the Lakes Park.

Employment: The City of Benton is proud to be a partner with the Kentucky Department of Economic Development in offering incentive packages to new and expanding businesses. With industrial land available for light to medium industry.

In nearby Murray and Mayfield there are employment opportunities available with companies like General Tire and Rubber Company, which has its largest tire manufacturing facility located in Mayfield. Ingersoll Rand has chosen Mayfield as its world headquarters. Two of the major industries in Murray are Briggs and Stratton, which make small engines, and Fisher-Price, which makes toys.
