Brandenburg, the county seat of Meade County, is situated on the south bank of the Ohio River in north central Kentucky. Brandenburg is located 46 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky; 147 miles southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio; and 162 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee. In 1990, the city had a population of 1,857 people.

Education
Primary and secondary education is provided to Brandenburg and Meade County by the Meade County School System. Six colleges and universities are located within 50 miles of Brandenburg. Vocational training is available at the Elizabethtown State Vocational - Technical School, 34 miles southeast of Brandenburg and locally at the Meade County Vocational Education Center.

The mild climate of Kentucky makes Brandenburg ideal for retirement as well as for raising families. Rain, not snow, is the primary precipitation method, and the beautiful trees and vegetation on the hilly area surrounding Brandenburg show the beneficial effects of the weather. Meade County is primarily an agricultural county, and about 1/3 of Brandenburg is still zoned agricultural.

Major employers of the area include: ARCH Chemical, Brandenburg Family Medicine, Meade County School Systems, Otter Creek Park (Summer Only), Ray's Ford-Mercury, Meade County Rural Electric, Fort Knox Military Installation, Tony Brown Chevrolet & Goodyear and Brandenburg Telephone Company.

Local recreation facilities in Brandenburg include a country club with an 18-hole golf course and the Meade-Olin Park which includes tennis courts, ball fields, soccer field, basketball courts, disc golf, picnic areas, a shelter area and a playground.

Flippins Run Park and Concordia Park each have boat ramps and picnic areas, plus soccer fields at Flippins Run.

The Brandenburg City Park spans the width of the downtown area, and includes a small playground for children, a checkers/chess table, and picnic tables. The view of the River is breathtaking here, with the Indiana shoreline and the Matthew Welch Bridge in the background. Counting the barges on the passing towboats makes for a relaxing afternoon. A Gazebo in the park hosts occasional concerts on the weekends.

Two boat ramps are available in the downtown area, with a large parking lot for cars and boat trailers at the Flippins Run Park area adjacent to the City Park. There are also soccer fields at Flippins Run, and the entrance to the Buttermilk Falls Historic Trail is between the two parks.

Otter Creek Park, located in eastern Meade County, is a 3,600-acre woodland on the Ohio River. Facilities at the park include a restaurant; a 24-unit lodge; cottages; 165 campsites; horseback riding; swimming; hiking; trails; fishing; tennis, basketball and volleyball courts; ball fields; playgrounds and picnic pavilions.

Other annual events are the Meade County Fair in August, Annual Christmas Dance, Annual Golf Tournament, Day at the Races and Health Fair.
