Brownsville, with an estimated 1998 population of 952, is located 22 miles northeast of Bowling Green, Kentucky; 86 miles northeast of Nashville, Tennessee; 96 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky; and 281 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri. Edmonson County, with a land area of 302 miles, is located in south-central Kentucky, partly within the Western Coal Field Region and partly within the Mississippian Plateaus Region. Nearly 47,000 acres of Mammoth Cave lies beneath Edmonson County. Edmonson County, designated as a "Scenic Byways" area by the Department of Transportation, offers over 80 miles of scenic roads.
