Frankfort is the seat of Franklin County and the capital of Kentucky. Originally located north of the Kentucky River, Frankfort expanded its city limits south of the River with the inclusion of once independent South Frankfort and Leestown. Frankfort's history spans back to the 1780's when English explorers began to settle here. Today, the town's landscape continues to express this rich heritage. One item of unique historical interest is the site of Daniel Boone's grave in the Frankfort Cemetery. Boone was perhaps the first white settler in Kentucky and his visions of expanding the American frontier fuel the pride Kentuckians have for him. Frankfort's special relationship with its past can also be seen in the restoration of the Old Capitol Building. Replaced in 1920 with a new building, this historic landmark has become a museum sponsored by the Kentucky Historical Society. The Frank Lloyd Wright - Zeigler-Brockman House, the Berry Hill Mansion, and the Liberty Hall Historic Site are among the many other attractions offering peaks into the area's history. Frankfort is home to Kentucky State University, which provides excellent educational programs, small classes, and a beautiful campus. Many of Frankfort's cultural activities take place on campus, and the university's sporting programs provide additional variety with respect to local entertainment. KSU also brings ethnic diversity to the town of Frankfort, which increases cultural awareness through campus activities. Frankfort is located 29 miles west of Lexington and 52 miles east of Louisville. Frankfort is serviced by I-64, US 127, US 421 and several state highways. Time never stands still around the State Capitol. Kentucky's floral clock measures off the minutes a foot and a half at a time, with giant hands weighing about a quarter of a ton apiece.
