Franklin, the seat of Simpson county, was established in 1819 as the seat of the new county and named to honor Benjamin Franklin. Today this community just a few miles north of the Tennesse border has a population of just over 7,000. Franklin is conveniently located for trips to Nashville and has many attractions of its own. It's easy to spot Franklin on any map of Kentucky. Not only is it right on I-65 at the southern border; but also where that border suddenly takes a little jog.(The story behind the little jog involves whiskey, government surveyors, and bribery; Kentucky has always had a flair for politics.) In its early years, Simpson County was known as a dueling ground. The farm of Sanford Duncan, near the state line, was the site of several "affairs of honor." Duncan built an inn where duelists gathered before meeting each other in battle. Franklin is the starting point for Kentucky's U.S. 31-W Heritage Corridor, a two lane trip down memory lane. Don't miss the African American Heritage Center, one of the states few museums of black heritage. And then take in a view of Octagon Hall, a few miles outside town. Next, just south of Bowling Green, you'll spy Lost River Cave Valley, a hideout of the Jesse James Gang. Make sure you sample the gift shops and specialty shops on the south end of Franklin. Also, be sure to stop at Kentucky Downs race course. The track is open year round for simulcast wagering, and live races are run in September. Barren River State Resort Park is just a few miles from Franklin. The park features boating, fishing, swimming, nature trails, and riding stables. The lodge overlooking the 10,000 acre lake is a great spot for lunch. Franklin enjoys a pleasant climate that is conducive to outdoor activities almost year round. If you enjoy a round of golf, Simpson County offers at least one golf course, open to the public. Franklin also offers other recreation such as horseback riding, and hiking at one of several nature preserves. There are many choices in the housing market though. From newer construction to the first homes built in Franklin, and with the choice in age, comes a choice in pricing too. Most homes in the region sell for under $60,000. Some new construction may sell for more than that. Franklin is a town that holds onto its values and family life is important here. For a friendly environment, and a place to call home, you cannot go wrong with Franklin!
