Horse Cave, population 2252, is a fourth class city by legislative approval. It is the largest city located in Hart County in south central Kentucky. The city is home to the Kentucky Repertory Theatre (formerly known as Horse Cave Theatre) and the American Cave Museum/Hidden River Cave, which are located on Main Street in downtown Horse Cave. Dart Container, Inc. is also located in Horse Cave and is the largest employer in the county. Located just outside of the city is Kentucky Down Under/Kentucky Caverns. Horse Cave Heritage Festival honors our rich heritage on the third weekend in September. This special event is particularly well known for quality musical entertainment. Other attractions include an antique car show, farm machinery, local crafts, agricultural exhibits, food booths, kids arcade, and historic walking tours. Horse Cave became a Kentucky Silver Renaissance City in 2000 and began a Main Street program in 2001. Many of the buildings in the downtown area are included on the National Register of Historic Places. Caverna High School, Caverna Memorial Hospital, Hart County Heath Care, Green River Produce Marketing Coop, Southern States Cooperative, and Square Deal Lumber Company are all located at the southern end of the city along 31-W.
