In 1987, "Murray-Kentucky Lake" was rated by Rand-McNally as the number one retirement community in the United States. A moderate climate, excellent health care, safety, low housing costs and taxes, a relaxing atmosphere and accessibility to a variety of recreational facilities and cultural events are just a few of the reasons this area was rated, and continues to be, the best retirement community in the nation. Kentucky Lake's 160,000 acres of water and 2,380 miles of shoreline provide a variety of water and outdoor recreation opportunities sufficient to satisfy the whole family.

For the angler, there's crappie, catfish, bluegill, sauger and largemouth, smallmouth and white bass. Professional fishing guides are available year-round. Water-skiing competitions, drag boat races, open regattas and more water-related activities fill the calendar for the thrill-seeker. If relaxation is more your style, sample a sunset view of Kentucky Lake and you'll soon be planning your next vacation back here.

Murray, like many towns, has its own annual celebration. It is the "Freedom Fest," several days of festivities centering around the Fourth of July.

The Murray-Calloway County Community Theater's Playhouse in the Park is one of the oldest community theaters in the state. It is housed in the 1907 L&N Freight Depot, which was moved to the county park..
