On January 6, 2003, Louisville merged its city and county governments to become the 16th largest city in America. Okolona is one of the communities that make up part of the greater Louisville metro area, and more specifically, South Louisville. Greater Louisville is now a diverse and vibrant community that encompasses more than 385 square miles, including such rich cultural assets as historic Churchill Downs, the world's most legendary racetrack and home to the most exciting two minutes in sports, the incomparable Kentucky Derby; one of the largest municipally-owned urban forests in the country, the Jefferson Memorial Forest; and one of the oldest free public library systems in existence. Okolona has a population of around 2,000 residents, but because of the new integration it is served by the largest public school system in the state and now also offers a myriad of post-secondary educational opportunities, including the University of Louisville and Bellarmine University. UPS, Humana, Ford Motor Company and GE are among the largest employers here in the greater Louisville area, and is also home to such signature products as the Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat, and Louisville Stoneware. Greater Louisville has consistently been recognized by Places Rated Almanac as one of the best places to live in the United States. The community offers a mild climate, inexpensive living, world-class health-care facilities, outstanding transportation modes, a wide choice of recreational pursuits, internationally renowned theater and arts, and a healthy, expanding economy. The Louisville area has 228 public tennis courts, 21 public golf courses and 31 private golf courses, including courses designed by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Fuzzy Zoeller. The Louisville Zoo, open year-round, features more than 1,300 animals and draws more than 570,000 visitors each year. The area's best known draws, of course, are the world-famous Kentucky Derby and the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival that precedes it. Festival events include the Pegasus Parade, a hot-air balloon race, a steamboat race and Thunder Over Louisville, the fireworks extravaganza that kicks off the festivities every year. The Louisville area also has excellent convention and trade-show facilities and one of America's top regional amusement parks, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom.
