Pikeville is a small town situated in the Cumberland Mountains of Central Appalachia. This community prides itself on being very clean. Pikeville, the recipient of several federal programs, was one of the first Model Cities. Federal programs helped the town build everything from a day-care center all the way to high-rise apartments for the elderly a
nd handicapped. This community is somewhat liberal and is very accepting of new neighbors.
Located at the easternmost tip of Kentucky in the coalfields of the Cumberland Mountains, Pike County covers 786 square miles of land area. In addition to being Kentucky's largest county, it is also one of the world's top producers of bituminous coal, with more than 35 million tons of coal mined here each year -almost 20 percent of Kentucky's total coal production.
Among Kentucky counties, Pike County ranks fifth in total retail sales and fifth in effective buying income. The county is the seventh biggest contributor to the state's budget in individual income tax paid and eighth in sales tax paid. Pike County is eleventh in general property tax collection. Kentucky's third-largest banking center, Pike County is headquarters for financial institutions and holding companies with more than one billion dollars in assets.
The county operates under a magisterial form of government. A County Judge/Executive, the chief executive officer, and 6 magistrates, one from each magisterial district, are elected every 4 years. While each magistrate has an office inside his own district, the entire court meets together twice per month at the Pike County Courthouse in Pikeville to manage the county's business.

The center of county and local government, Pikeville is also the region's legal and judicial headquarters, holding federal, district, and circuit court. With well over 100 attorneys, 30 CPA's, and more than 900 other businesses, Pikeville is the financial, industrial, and retail marketplace of the mountains.
