Shively, Kentucky

Population: 15,535
Located in Jefferson County

Shively, a western Jefferson county town and suburb of Louisville was settled about 1780. Among the early settlers was Christian Shively who operated a mill and tavern. The town became identified with St. Helen Catholic Church, established in 1897, but the name Shively was adopted for the post office, which opened in 1920 and has since closed, because the name St. Helen was already in use. Shively was incorporated in 1938. The population today is approximately 15,535.

There's a lot of optimism in Shively nowadays. Known during its entire 62-year history as "spirited", the City has plenty of reason to look ahead to community betterment. Emphasis for development is fast shifting to urban in-fill, taking advantage of abandoned or underused former industrial sites.

Louisville is a considerable town, prettily situated on the Kentucky, or south side of the Ohio River. Shively is considered a part of the greater Louisville area. This gives Shively a great edge because it is so close to a large city, and has wonderful access to all the best that Louisville has to offer, and yet it is far enough removed, that you feel like you are leaving the city behind when you cross the city line.

The falls of the Ohio are about a mile below Louisville, and produce a rapid too sudden for the boats to pass, except in the rainy season. The scenery on the Kentucky side is much finer than on that of Indiana, or Ohio, (just don't tell them that!)

The state of Kentucky was the darling spot of many tribes of Indians, and was reserved among them as a common hunting-ground; it is said, that they cannot yet name it without emotion, and that they have a sad and wild lament that they still chant to its memory.

Another factor that plays in the high desirability of Shively is the extremely reasonable prices of houses. The median price is $83,000 for a three-bedroom average size home. There are many other housing options too, including apartments, lofts, studios, and garden flats.

While Shively exists as a vital and emergent economic region, the superior quality of life enjoyed by residents and striking charm of the county ensured through careful planning and zoning remain hallmarks of the area. Shively is a town that is ambitious and is looking for people who feel the same way. You'd be a great match!
