The Old Downtown Area of Denham Springs has been converted to Antique Shops, Antique and Craft Malls, unique gift and specialty shops, florist & gift shops, fine jewelry stores, interior design galleries, sidewalk cafe's, and coffee shops.

But it wasn't always that way. Ground-water springs which some to the surface at the base of the low- lying ridge which runs through the center of the city have figured in the city's name since at least the 1850's. The area has been known as Amite Springs, Hill's Springs, and Denham Springs. History tells us that William Denham discovered mineral springs on his property and a health resort quickly grew up there.

Today, Denham Springs is the largest town in the parish with a population of about 9,000, and is just a brief drive from Baton Rouge. There's plenty of open space here, and lots of natural land, with water, marshes, and a bounty of birds and other wildlife.

Train Station Park, an open air, covered pavilion in the town sits on the edge of the antique part of the village. It's a great place to converge after a day of hard shopping on the Main Street. Another attraction is a park known simply as "The Springs". It is located on River Road with a trail which leads to the spring and then to the Amite River.

Rivers and springs tend to be the focus here, and with so many in such close proximity is it any wonder? Of course, that is not all there is here! Recreational activities abound in the area, from local golf courses, to the night life of Baton Rouge.

Tired of bland food? You've got to taste shrimp made Cajun style! Your taste buds will thank you. There are plenty of good restaurants around, you can sample the many styles of cooking right here in the area. One thing to remember though, leave your alligator at home, as it is illegal to tie an alligator to a fire hydrant.

Many of the older homes are located on well established plantation-style properties, whereas the new construction is generally built on city-size lots, although they are generally spacious lots.
