There are many nice subdivisions in the surrounding areas. Prices for homes range from $80,000 and up. Lot sizes are usually an acre or more, and there is a wide variety to choose from. The school facilities are very good, and the grade point average is above the national average.
Education
Southeastern Louisiana University is a large regional university based in Hammond and one of the city's largest employers. It was established in 1928 through the efforts of the educator Linus A. Sims, then the principal of Hammond High School. The city's public schools are part of the Tangipahoa Parish School District and include Hammond High School, Hammond Junior High, Eastside Elementary, Westside Elementary, Southeastern Louisiana University Laboratory School, and Crystal Academy (alternative school).
The Catholic Church operates two schools in the area: Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, which is just north of the city and Holy Ghost Catholic School (pre-kindergarten through 8th grades). In addition, Trafton Academy (pre-K through 8th) is a private school serving area students.
Our crime rate is low. Many of our citizens are transplants from the urban areas of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. We also have a large number of commuters from these areas, as well as retirees who have sold their homes and moved here for the slower pace and good fishing.
