Laplace, Louisiana

Population: 27,684
Located in St. John The Baptist Parish

The people of the Karlstein Settlement first settled the Village of Laplace. They crossed the Mississippi River to find land that was suitable for farming and establish a home there. Soon after, people from Biloxi and New Orleans as well as directly from France came to the area.

The Village of Laplace and the Laplace Plantation were named after Basile Laplace, a French entrepreneur who came to New Orleans to set up a pharmaceutical business. Basile acquired a plantation in Bonnet Carre, then acquired the Thibaud Plantation in 1879 and later the Perilloux Plantation. He then combined the three and named it the Laplace Plantation. Laplace was a growing community by the turn of the century. The Village of Laplace grew rapidly into a progressive town during the early part of the century.

Today Laplace has grown with the industry, and business and is in a great location for commuting as it is situated just west of the City of New Orleans. It makes an interesting contrast because New Orleans is a city on the go and on the move 24 hours a day, but Laplace is a quiet, suburban community, a little removed from the hype of the big city.

You are never far from water here in Laplace. The Gulf of Mexico is just a few minutes away, and so is the river. With so much water around is it any surprise that there is a state law against tying your alligator to a fire hydrant! Of course, you have to sample food made Cajun style to truly appreciate the South!

Recreation is the name of the game too; with plenty of wide open spaces, beaches, golf courses and a wonderfully mild climate to enjoy the outdoors all year round. Snow is a rare occurrence here as the winter temperatures seldom drop below the 40's. Summers are known to be hot and humid, so make sure you have the air on!

There is plenty of activity when it comes the house market. Currently there are four new sub-divisions being built in the Laplace area; they start at $110,000 for a 1,500 square foot home with three bedrooms, all the way to $250,000 for a 2,725 square foot home with four bedrooms and a lake view. Most homes in the area have lake access, making the water an important part of the lives of Laplace residents.

For the best of all worlds, from the quiet to the frenetic pace of life in New Orleans, from the placid waters of the lakes, to the excitement of the Gulf of Mexico, Laplace has it all and more. This one community you certainly don't want to miss out on!
