Mandeville, Louisiana - 2009 Top 100 Winner

The City of Mandeville, gateway to the North Shore and St. Tammany Parish, enjoys a lifestyle that is quite different from New Orleans, its South Shore neighbor. Mandeville embraces the serenity of its rich natural environment. As a waterfront and water-oriented community, Mandeville enjoys a temperate climate amid a lush canopy of live oaks, magnolias and towering pines that mingles with sea breezes to give Mandeville the name "Heart of the Ozone Belt." Wildlife, such as squirrels, rabbits, opossums, raccoons, deer, armadillos, fish and numerous species of birds and water fowl are abundant throughout the area.

Our economic outlook is good. Mandeville residents have a common goal: to work hard, and support their families to the best of their ability. Our unemployment rate is extremely low, and our population continues to grow. Mandeville is the most desired city to live within the fastest growing parish in the State of Louisiana. Seventy five percent of our housing market consists of single family homes in nicely landscaped, upscale neighborhoods. The other 25% is a mixture of condos, newly constructed apartments and three prestigious retirement communities. Our market was directly affected by rapid growth and skyrocketing prices after Hurricane Katrina. Now we have returned to a steady, consistent level.

The Mandeville Public Schools are consistently ranked among the best in the state, and have been awarded Blue Ribbon status by the U.S. Department of Education. Pontchartrain Elementary is the only five-star elementary school in the state. We also have excellent private and parochial schools. Education is one of our main draws and we have worked steadily to keep up with state-of-the-art educational opportunities. Many vocational and adult education opportunities are available locally, as well.

Our community, roughly six square miles, exhibits a well-integrated sense of quality and scale. Planning guidelines have established spacious lot sizes, generous building setbacks, and overall low-density residential development. We limit building height in order to ensure that the pines and hardwoods retain their dominance as our community's vertical element, and we have enacted landscaping requirements to preserve and replace trees and vegetation. Mandeville is proud to be a Tree City USA.

Our residents are a tremendous resource for continued success. We have a strong volunteer base, made up largely of senior citizens who desire to give back to the community because we are a wonderful, safe place to retire. We believe in maintaining our culture, beauty and quality of life here, and we take seriously our commitment to our citizens, who agree that Mandeville is a wonderful place to live. We are dedicated to that mission and the safety and well-being of our residents.
