Marksville is over 190 years old and is located on LA Highway 1, the most scenic north-south route through Louisiana. Marksville is situated near the confluence of the Atchafalaya, Mississippi, and Red Rivers and home to one of the earliest Native American civilizations yet discovered in the United States. The Marksville Prehistoric Commemorative area is a state historical site.

Marksville has over 100 historical markers throughout the community designating historical sites and buildings and can offer guided bus tours to interested groups.

Paragon Casino Resort is a land based casino owned by the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana. Fort DeRussy was an earthen fort built by slaves to defend the Red River during the Civil War. The fort is located three miles north of Marksville and named after Col. Lewis G. Derussy, who is buried on the site. The fort was captured by Union troops during the Red River Campaign of General A.J. Smith. Union forces attempted to destroy the fort, but a large portion still exists. A visitor can see the earthen structure and visit the cemetery. A monument to the slaves who helped in the construction of the fort is part o the overall historical ambience of the fort and its history. Fort Derussy is a state historical site.

The Marksville State Commemorative Area was designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior in 1964. The Marksville culture is a southeastern variant of the Hopewell culture. Numerous conical mounds and earthworks are featured in the area. Archaeologists believe that the mounds are ceremonial and not defensive. Some of these mounds are thought to be over 3700 years old. The museum houses exhibits and displays, an audio visual program, restrooms and offices. Interpretive tours of the facility are conducted by park personnel.
