Slidell is the most populous town in St. Tammany Parish. Founded in 1888, Slidell is rich in history and owes much of its growth to the emergence of the railroad. As the scope of industry has changed over the years the town has adapted to provide for the needs of a growing and changing community. Slidell's most recent growth spurt occurred in 1962 when NASA built the Slidell Computer Complex, which today supports the Stennis Space Center. The St. Tammany public school system enrolls 33,000 students who attend seven high schools and forty-one elementary, middle, and junior high schools. It is recognized as one of the best public educational systems in the state, with students consistently ranking about the national and state levels on standardized test scores. For sports enthusiasts, several youth and adult leagues and clubs are available, such as the Slidell Youth Soccer Club and the Slidell Ladies Cabbageball League. Many other recreational activities are available, such as fishing, hunting, camping and boating. Slidell is one of the few cities in the country to lie near the intersection of three interstate highways (I-10, I-12 and I-59). New Orleans is just 35 minutes away by car and the popular Covington-Mandeville area is 20 minutes to the west. Geographically, Slidell is located at the crossroads of highways and waterways...thus, you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the lakes and rivers that literally surround the town!
