Zachary was known as a farming community until 1883, when Illinois Central Railroad ran right through Dearl Zachary's one hundred sixty acre farm. Mr. Zachary sold his farm for a mere $900, but, his name remained and today the city stands strong. Today over 11,000 people call Zachary home. Zachary facilitates its students with two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The community takes great pride investing in their students. Athletics and fine arts round out the student's educational career. When visiting Zachary, be sure to take a stroll through the Zachary Historic Village. The McHugh House Museum is a turn of the century home filled with genuine oak floors and woodwork and other working artifacts that are original to the house. Other historically significant buildings such as a barn, farmhouse, and a Native American settlement can be spied in this beautiful district. The Port Hudson State Historic Site is just located in nearby Jackson. This park is situated right on the site where a forty-eight day siege took place during the Civil War. Visitors enjoy live reenactments of the battle that took place over one hundred years ago. The park also boasts three observation towers, a museum, picnic area and a beautiful boardwalk. The climate in Zachary is wonderfully warm. Throughout the winter months the thermometer rests in the forties and summer time brings temperatures soaring up to the eighties and nineties with occasional readings into the one hundred degree range. Such weather is perfect for golfers. The Copper Mill Golf Course located right in Zachary offers championship caliber golf to residents and visitors alike. Resembling a Scottish "links-style" course, Copper Mills affords golfers sparkling streams, and open rolling grasslands dotted with pot bunkers. There is an ample supply of playgrounds and picnic areas for children and families to enjoy an afternoon or evening in the outdoors. The cities park and recreation department offers an array of activities to keep Zachary residents busy in sports and leisure. Zachary enjoys an ideal location for real estate options.
